Around sixty families live in a community made up of floating houses that have run aground because of the drought in the Amazon. Many looked after boats and depended on fishing to survive. During last year's drought, the waters of the Rio Negro could reach this area. Today, the region is completely dry and the land is full of cracks and isolated houses. According to the Amazonas Civil Defence, forty-two cities are in an emergency situation and almost three hundred thousand people have been affected.
