AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - An injured jaguar was rescued on Wednesday afternoon (October 1) after being spotted swimming for several hours in the Rio Negro, in Manaus.

Witnesses reported that the animal appeared tired and disoriented.

The rescue operation mobilized specialized state and municipal teams, along with animal protection organizations, which formed a task force to safely remove the feline from the water.

Following the rescue, the jaguar is expected to be taken to a veterinary clinic for necessary medical care.

The animal’s final destination has not yet been determined, but authorities are considering the Jungle Warfare Training Center (CIGS), the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), or the Manaus Zoo as possible options.

According to officials involved, the priority is to ensure the jaguar’s full recovery and, if viable, its reintroduction into the wild.
