RIO BRANCO, BRAZIL - A jaguar was spotted during a hunting attempt at the Rio Acre Ecological Station, a protected area located in Assis Brasil, a municipality in the interior of Brazil’s Acre state, in the Amazon region. The rare footage was recorded by agents from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) on Tuesday (3).

The images show the big cat emerging from the waters of the Acre River and running toward a wild pig in an attempt to seize its prey along the riverbank. The pig manages to outrun the predator and escapes by crossing to the opposite side of the water source.

The agents were positioned further upstream and were able to capture the moment on video. Part of the team was conducting research activities along the station’s trails, while others remained at the base, about 150 meters from where the jaguar was spotted.

According to ICMBio, this was the first recorded sighting of a jaguar at the ecological station. In May 2024, a cougar (Puma concolor) was also recorded in the Rio Acre Ecological Station.
