A female manatee was found dead this Friday (1st) in a cove at Praia do Meio, in the municipality of Parintins.
The animal was stranded on a sandbar that extends in the middle of the Amazon River, a result of the historic drought that has hit the state.
The state of Amazonas is facing its worst drought in 2024.
A professor was the one who found the manatee while visiting the place with his family.
According to him, the animal was intact and appeared to have died a few hours ago.
The drought that forms sandbars is an aggravating factor because it reduces the navigation area for manatees, allowing them to run aground on the beaches.
In addition, the animal becomes easy prey for hunters.
A team from the Municipal Department of the Environment was called to monitor the site and rescue the manatee's body, which will undergo analysis.
