RONDÔNIA, BRAZIL — The Girassol traditional June dance group won the adult category of the Flor do Maracujá Festival in Porto Velho, Rondônia, with a performance inspired by the Odyssey, the epic poem attributed to Greek poet Homer.
Held at Parque dos Tanques, the festival featured performances by June dance groups and boi-bumbá groups, with shows combining music, dance, costumes and stage design.
Girassol brought to the arena a narrative based on Odysseus' journey home, also known as Ulysses, after the Trojan War. One of the main elements of the performance was the Trojan Horse, used as a symbol of strategy, unity and victory within the storyline.
The program also included competitions in the children's and boi-bumbá categories, as well as the selection of groups that earned promotion to the competition's special category for the next edition.
Flor do Maracujá is part of Porto Velho's cultural calendar and brings together traditional June festival expressions from Brazil's North Region, combining elements of Amazonian popular culture with different artistic forms.
