Yesterday (12), the Federal Police carried out an operation to dismantle a group specialised in falsifying public documents used to make illegally harvested timber legal in the cities of Alta Floresta D'Oeste/RO, Porto Velho and the districts of Vista Alegre do Abunã, Nova Califórnia and Extrema. Twelve search and seizure warrants issued by the federal court were carried out, as well as the sequestration/blocking of more than R$ 51 million reais. The action also resulted in the seizure of a vehicle and a weapon in the district of Nova California. The investigation began in 2019 after an anonymous tip-off that loggers in the region were exploiting timber in the Kaxarari Land, including with the connivance of indigenous leaders from that location. To the extent of their involvement, those being investigated will face charges of ideological falsehood, money laundering, crimes against the environment and criminal organisation, the combined penalties for which could exceed 27 years in prison.
