TOCANTINS, BRAZIL - An anaconda approximately three meters long was rescued after appearing in a reservoir near a house in the rural area of Formoso do Araguaia, in southern Tocantins, Brazil. During the rescue, an agent attempted to lift the snake to assist in its removal and was grazed by a bite.
A local community resident reported having seen the anaconda in a small reservoir just five meters from her house. The snake was released back into the wild at a different location.
Anacondas are non-venomous snakes. This species can be found throughout the country and can grow up to seven meters long, as in the case of the green anaconda.
Despite their threatening appearance, the species is not venomous and is classified as a constrictor snake. This means it uses muscular strength to immobilize and kill its prey by asphyxiation.
