MANAUS, BRAZIL - A strong rainstorm hit Manaus on Sunday, causing disruptions across several areas of the capital. Videos shared on social media showed flooded streets and a marketplace in the city’s East Zone completely underwater.
According to Municipal Government, four incidents were reported to the City Cooperation Center (CCC). These included three cases of flooding—one in the North Zone, one in the East Zone, and one in the Central-South Zone—as well as a landslide in the North Zone.
The floodwaters invaded corridors of the public market, making it difficult for people to move around. Workers used brooms in an effort to sweep the water out onto the street and reduce the damage. In the Sharp community, in the East Zone of the city, heavy rainfall flooded streets and caused losses for residents whose homes were partially submerged.
City authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged residents, especially in flood-prone and hillside areas, to remain cautious as rain is expected to continue.
