MANAUS, BRAZIL – A jaguar was caught on a security camera attacking a dog at a rural property in the municipality of Rio Preto da Eva, in Brazil's Amazonas state. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning (July 28).

The footage shows the big cat entering the property's yard and quietly approaching a dog that was asleep. The jaguar suddenly lunges at the animal, biting it on the neck. Startled, the dog wakes up and begins barking.

After the dog's reaction, the jaguar retreats and leaves the area. Another dog that was also in the yard runs inside the house.

The Rio Preto da Eva Municipal Department of the Environment confirmed that jaguars have been reported in rural areas of the municipality. Authorities advise residents to keep their distance if they encounter the animals and to notify the appropriate environmental agencies.

Because jaguars are primarily nocturnal, sightings are most common during the night and in the early morning hours. Attacks on people, however, are considered rare.
