ALTO ALEGRE-RORAIMA, BRAZIL - There is little time left before soybean planting begins in Roraima.
February is still the off-season.
And most of the production areas are like this, without crops.
However, in the municipality of Alto Alegre, in the interior of the state, the scenario is different.
Here, the soybean plants are large and already in the maturation phase.
Contrary to what one might imagine, this crop is not intended for grain production for export or industry.
The main purpose is to supply seeds for the next harvest.
Irrigation is an important point for the development of the plants.
This year, temperatures are milder in the region and this helps in seed production.
Tests are carried out to evaluate the performance of the plants.
After harvesting, the grains are sent to a processing unit where they undergo cleaning, classification and treatment.
The process also includes laboratory analysis outside the state to ensure market standards are met.
After quality certification, the seeds are stored in cold rooms under controlled conditions until they are sold.
Currently, the supplier serves around 60% of the market in the region.
