AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - Business owners in downtown Manaus are starting to feel the impact of the Rio Negro's rising waters.
According to the Civil Defense agency, the river reached the severe flood level in the capital of Amazonas state on June 28.
Water has already submerged at least two streets providing access to the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market—a historic landmark of the city—and the Manaus Moderna Market.
Both markets are located along Manaus’s riverfront, on the banks of the Rio Negro. In the area, floodwaters now cover the pavement, raising concerns among drivers and market vendors.
The Brazilian Geological Service (SGB) forecasts that water levels will not surpass the historic high recorded in 2021.
As of Wednesday, 40 out of 62 municipalities in the state are in a state of emergency due to the flooding.
