ACRE, BRAZIL - An unusual scene has drawn attention to the severe drought gripping parts of the Brazilian Amazon during the peak of the dry season.
Two children were filmed crossing the confluence of the Jordão and Tarauacá rivers using bicycles, a striking illustration of the ongoing water crisis.
The footage was captured in Jordão, a remote municipality in the state of Acre, western Brazil. According to local Civil Defense authorities, the area has gone over a month without rain, causing river levels to drop drastically.
As of the latest measurement on Sunday (July 27), the water level had fallen to just 61 centimeters.
With river depths so low, navigation has been restricted. Only vessels carrying a maximum of 500 kilograms are currently permitted to operate.
