Construction of the Mercadão, as it is affectionately known today by the people of Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, began in 1882.
The project was by French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the same engineer who designed the tower in Paris.
The building was constructed by the company Backus & Brisbin, which operated in New Orleans (USA), Mexico and Belém (PA).
The building consisted of a covered warehouse and a stone masonry façade facing the Rio Negro, whose neo-Gothic pediment had a German-made clock installed.
The metal structure was entirely imported from Liverpool, ordered from a catalog by the company Francisc Norton Engineers.
With the growth of the population, the place needed to be expanded.
Currently, the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market has six cast iron pavilions.
