The Amazon Chelonian Programme works with the Amazon turtle, Tracajá, Iaçá, Cabeçudo, Muçuã and Irapuca. Born in 1979, it is considered to be the oldest species preservation project in the world. To accompany the release work, the teams set off in a boat with Ibama agents until they reached Ilha dos Camaleões, in Afuá, a municipality in the state of Pará. The project is a complete endeavour, divided into stages. These include the protection, management and monitoring of feeding and spawning sites. In the forty-first edition of the project, 179,000 chelonians were released over the course of the year. Fifteen thousand were released at this stage, here in Afuá. The event was also attended by researchers, students and local residents.
