Small farmers have been suffering for three months from the lack of rain in the region. There isn't enough water to irrigate crops or even for their own consumption. The reservoirs and artesian wells have dried up or are at low levels. More than 100 farmers have lost their corn, watermelon, cassava, potato and bean crops due to the drought. Some are cutting costs to avoid further losses. Roraima is experiencing the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, which is prolonging the drought in the region. Civil defence estimates that more than 5,000 people are suffering from the consequences of the drought in rural areas. The Branco River, the state's largest and most important river, is only 45 centimetres away from reaching its lowest level ever recorded. According to meteorologists, the drought in the Boa Vista region is expected to last until April.
