PARÁ, BRAZIL – A barge loaded with utility poles and a truck sank in southeastern Pará, in northern Brazil.
Nearby small vessels assisted in rescuing all crew members, who were safely evacuated without injury.
The incident occurred on Thursday (July 24) in Breu Branco, near the lake of the Tucuruí hydroelectric plant. Footage of the sinking circulated widely in the region on Friday (July 25).
According to local reports, the barge had run aground on a sandbank and began to list several hours later before partially submerging.
The vessel had departed from Marabá and was en route to the city of Itaporanga, in the state of Amazonas.
Residents said efforts were made to stabilize the vessel, but the weight of the cargo worsened the situation, ultimately causing the structure to give way.
No official information has been released regarding the number of utility poles or the approximate weight of the cargo.
