BOA VISTA-RORAIMA, BRAZIL - A video shows fish swimming on Raimundo Rodrigues Coelho Avenue, in the Conjunto Cidadão neighborhood, this Wednesday (9), after heavy rains in Boa Vista, capital of Roraima.
The images were recorded by bricklayer Antônio Souza, 49, a resident of the neighborhood.
Antônio still manages to catch one of the fish with his hand, amidst the brick debris.
Antônio says he recorded the images as a way to draw the attention of the authorities to the conditions of the avenue.
The road is close to a lake and is only paved up to a certain point.
He has lived in the neighborhood for 10 years and says that this is not the first time that the unusual scene with the fish has occurred.
In winter, it is common for the avenue to overflow and they appear.
The Boa Vista city government said that regions around lakes are considered Permanent Preservation Areas, and constructions in these places are usually the result of unauthorized occupations.
However, it will investigate what can be done to mitigate the impact of the rainy season within what is permitted by environmental law.
The biologist and head of the Animal Science Department at the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR), Rodrigo Feltran, analyzed the video.
According to him, the smaller fish could be a species called Tamoatá, while the larger ones are known as Jeju.
