AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - IIn July, a month when water levels in the Rio Negro typically begin to recede, the river continues to rise in Manaus.
On Friday (July 4), the river reached 29.04 meters, according to the city’s port authority — a level not seen since 2014.
Despite the increase, Brazil’s Geological Service (SGB) states that the Rio Negro is not expected to surpass the historic mark of 30.02 meters recorded in 2021.
Beyond the capital, water levels are also continuing to rise in towns across the interior of the state, particularly those along the Amazon and Solimões rivers.
According to the SGB, recent heavy rains have directly contributed to the rising floodwaters.
As the flooding intensifies, 40 of the state’s 62 municipalities have declared a state of emergency. In total, more than 530,000 people have already been affected by the disaster.
