MANAUS-AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - An injured harpy eagle was found near a country road in the District of Freguesia do Andirá, in the rural area of the municipality of Barreirinha, in Amazonas.
Residents of the community contacted the environmental authorities, and the bird was taken to the Municipal Department of the Environment (Semma), in the municipal headquarters.
A veterinarian examined the harpy and found a fracture in one of its clawed paws.
According to the Department of the Environment, specialized environmental agencies in Manaus, the state capital, were called to align the next steps in caring for the animal.
There is a possibility that the bird will be transferred to receive specialized treatment and then returned to its natural habitat.
The harpy eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the Americas and is considered endangered due to illegal hunting.
