AMAZONAS, BRAZIL — A section of the BR-230 highway, commonly known as the Transamazônica, has been closed due to flooding from the Madeira River in southern Amazonas.
Images from the area show parts of the road completely underwater, making vehicle passage nearly impossible.
The closure is already impacting around 70,000 people across three municipalities in the region.
In Apuí, the local government has declared a state of emergency. In the health sector, some patients have been transferred to Manaus due to limited access to care.
Classes have also been suspended, as the highway conditions make transportation difficult.
According to local officials, the federal government has recognized Apuí’s emergency plan. As part of the response, the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), has begun contracting ferries to maintain the flow of essential goods and local agricultural products.
Livestock farming, a key industry in the region, plays a vital role in supplying food to the state capital, Manaus.
