The long lines of trucks forming on the BR-319 highway led the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ) to announce emergency measures on Saturday (12) to reduce logistical bottlenecks on the road.
Among the measures is the temporary and emergency authorization for a new company to operate two more ferries on the crossing.
At some points, the line of vehicles extends for up to four kilometers.
According to ANTAQ, the determination makes it possible to increase the number of ferries available to help reduce vehicle queues.
Now, other companies that meet the legal requirements will be able to request authorization to temporarily work on this route.
In addition, part of the road has been impassable for over 30 years, and in 2022, two bridges collapsed, leading to the installation of ferries to transport vehicles and pedestrians.
However, the structures are insufficient compared to the flow of trucks that pass along the road.
In addition, the low level of the rivers in the region also hinders the navigability of boats.
The long lines of trucks that form on the highway have also caused concern among merchants in the municipality of Careiro, in the interior of Amazonas.
With the difficulty of getting around, the lack of some food products and mineral water is already visible in local businesses.
