The National Water Agency (ANA) declared, on Monday (29), a situation of water shortage in the Madeira and Purus rivers, in Amazonas.
The decision was made by the agency's collegiate board, in Brasília, and the measure will remain in place until November 30.
The forecast is that, in 2024, Amazonas will have a severe drought along the same lines or even worse than the one the state experienced last year.
According to the agency, the measure aims to intensify the hydrological monitoring processes of the basins.
Identify impacts on water use and propose possible preventive measures.
According to the climatology institutes, the Madeira and Purus rivers had below-average rainfall during the rainy season, from November to April.
This trend continues in the current dry season.
According to ANA, the statements seek to communicate to government officials and the population about the severity of the drought situation in the region.
This allows management institutions and different users of water resources in the Madeira River and the Purus River basin to adopt preventive measures to mitigate the impacts on the various uses of water.
The Madeira River is one of the tributaries of the Amazon River.
It is an important waterway used for river transportation of cargo and passengers, between Porto Velho (RO) and Itacoatiara (AM).
The Purus River basin is located in the states of Amazonas and Acre.
The water source has a large number of meanders and thousands of lakes distributed across a gigantic floodplain.
