A storm caused the Tamarupá and Pirarara rivers to overflow in the city of Cacoal, in the interior of the state of Rondônia, on Monday (25). At least eight neighbourhoods were affected. According to the town hall, more than 300 families were left homeless. Civil Defence reported that it rained 70 millimetres in Cacoal during the night and early morning. Families had to leave their homes in a hurry. The Cacoal Autonomous Water and Sewage Service (SAAE) issued a statement saying that the water mains had been affected by the rain, compromising the water supply in some neighbourhoods. In addition, the BR-364 motorway, at km 239, was flooded. The Federal Highway Police (PRF) issued a recommendation that vehicles should not attempt to cross the jeopardised stretches. Civil Defence has issued a red alert for heavy rain and flooding. A contingency plan has been initiated, as the rain is expected to continue.
