AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - Nine people were left adrift after a speedboat sank on the Uatumã River in the interior of Brazil’s Amazonas state on Sunday afternoon (27), according to local reports.
Among the passengers was a child. All occupants were rescued alive by a boat that happened to be passing through the area at the time of the incident.
The vessel had departed from the town of Itapiranga and was en route to Urucará, where several of the passengers were scheduled to take an exam for a seafarer’s license.
Midway through the journey, the boat experienced technical difficulties and eventually sank.
Despite the scare, no injuries were reported. The victims lost only personal belongings.
The cause of the sinking remains unclear.
The Brazilian Navy has been contacted but has not yet issued a statement.
