AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said in an exclusive interview with Rede Amazônica, a TV Globo affiliate, broadcast on Tuesday, September 9, that he supports oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River, off the coast of Amapá in the Equatorial Margin — an area regarded as the country’s new oil frontier. He emphasized, however, that any development must be carried out with caution and in full respect for the environment.

“We want to preserve the Amazon not as something untouchable, but so it can be developed — at sea or on land — in the most responsible way.”

“That is how we will move forward with oil exploration. What we are doing is completing the necessary steps. Petrobras has carried out the (simulated) test, Ibama must be satisfied with the findings of the assessment, and Ibama will now grant us permission to conduct the first experiment.”
