AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - A major stretch of the Trans-Amazonian Highway has been swallowed by the rising waters of the Madeira River.
Around 20 kilometers of BR-230 are underwater, cutting off the only overland access to the city of Apuí and the district of Santo Antônio do Matupi, in Manicoré.
Both areas have declared a state of emergency.
The flooded section has become a dangerous trap. Despite the risks, some continue to attempt the crossing.
Hidden potholes and strong river currents have already caused several accidents.
Some communities have been isolated for over 36 days.
The disruption is taking a toll on local commerce, with logistics becoming increasingly difficult.
In response, the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) launched an emergency operation and deployed ferries.
The vessels now take up to four days to navigate the Madeira and Aripuanã rivers to reach the community of Prainha.
From there, the journey continues by land to Matupi and Apuí.
