The severe drought that has hit the Madeira River this year has revealed the wreckage of a ship that historians claim is from the 19th century.
The remains of the vessel are stranded in the Pedral do Marmelo passage, located in the municipality of Manicoré, in the interior of Amazonas.
The historic wreckage was seen for the first time this year by sailors and fishermen who were traveling through the region in the last week of September.
According to Caio Giulliano Paião, a doctor in social history, it has not yet been possible to determine precisely which vessel was found.
To do so, research will be needed on site to cross-reference data with works by authors who wrote about navigation in the Amazon.
Acording to the historian, based on its characteristics, it is possible to state that the vessel is a North American construction known as a "flatboat".
This type of boat was for navigation in shallow waters.
