Sport fisherman Anderson Guedes formed an unusual bond with a caiman after accidentally hooking the animal in the Madeira River, in Porto Velho, the capital of Brazil’s Rondônia state, he said. Guedes explained that he had been targeting a peacock bass when the incident occurred.
“Caimans often attack artificial lures because they think they are fish. Since they stay submerged, you can’t see them. You cast the lure, start reeling it in, and suddenly the caiman strikes,” Guedes said.
After realizing he had hooked the reptile, the fisherman managed to retrieve it and release it back into the water. Unexpectedly, instead of swimming away, the caiman remained close to the kayak, appearing curious.
Faced with the situation, Guedes threw several fish to the animal, which then began to interact calmly with him.
“I thought, ‘this caiman is very calm, maybe it liked that I caught it.’ It sounds like a joke, but it’s true. I had some fish I was going to use as bait, started feeding it, and it ate three or four,” he said.
Even after attempting to leave the area, the fisherman noticed the caiman stayed nearby and followed him for several meters.
“The strangest part was that I caught it, released it, paddled away in the kayak, and it followed me as if it wanted to go kayaking again. I think it felt somewhat grateful that I removed the hook and released it,” Guedes said.
