AMAZONAS, BRAZIL – A woman who sustained injuries during an expedition with friends in the Serra do Aracá, located in Barcelos in the interior of the Brazilian Amazon, was rescued on Thursday 22th.
She endured four days with a broken leg following a fall while climbing a mountain in a remote and difficult-to-access region of the Amazon rainforest.
A task force from the Amazon Military Command (CMA), with support from the State Civil Defense, carried out the rescue operation.
According to the Army, the woman was part of a group of five people.
Due to the steep terrain and the considerable distance to the nearest support point, she had to remain at the accident site until a specialized team could reach her.
Three individuals, including the injured woman, were airlifted by military aircraft to Manaus, where they received medical care.
The remaining expedition members continued their route back to a designated rendezvous point where a boat was waiting for them.
The incident was first reported on Monday 19th, when the municipal government of Barcelos contacted the Amazonas State Military Fire Department (CBMAM).
On Tuesday 20th, a team of four firefighters specialized in high-altitude rescues was dispatched to the area to begin the operation.
The Serra do Aracá is home to El Dourado Waterfall—one of Brazil’s tallest at 353 meters—and lies within the Serra do Aracá State Park, which spans over 1.8 million hectares.
The region is considered one of the most isolated in the state, situated approximately 200 kilometers from Barcelos and 534 kilometers from Manaus.
