The death of over 7 thousand cattle and cows due to lack of pasture occurred over a period of at least 40 days in Roraima.
The problem, which has left the state in an emergency situation in 10 of the 15 municipalities, is caused by the infestation of caterpillars and weeds that have devoured the herd's food on rural properties.
Since May, 7,139 head of cattle have died.
Inland, farm areas became cemeteries for starving animals.
The damage was assessed by the Institute of Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Iater), a state government body that monitors the situation with affected producers.
It is estimated that at least 54,000 hectares of pasture - the equivalent of 75,000 football fields - have been devastated.
The loss, so far, is R$63 million, including loss of cattle and dead grass on 840 properties in Roraima, according to a preliminary estimate by Iater.
Teams are still on the field and the damage could be greater.
The overpopulation of caterpillars is related to the environmental imbalance caused by the intense El Niño in the first months of the year in Roraima.
With the drought and hot spots, the population of natural predators of these pests in rural areas has decreased and the impact has been mainly on the producers' herd.
To combat pests and restore pasture on properties, the government, through Agência Desenvolvimento, announced the transfer of R$1,750 to rural producers.
The amount will be granted through the Desenvolvimento Roraima program.
The maximum ceiling that each producer must receive is 5 hectares, equivalent to R$8,750.
