The Acre River has surpassed the mark recorded in the same period last year, which was 17.72 metres. By 9am on Monday morning (4), the level had reached 17.78 metres, above the 2023 record in the Acre capital. The level is 65 centimetres above the highest ever recorded in the capital, which was 18.40 metres exactly nine years ago. Vitor Augusto, a resident of the Base neighbourhood, comments on the situation in the capital. "We didn't expect it. We knew it would flood, but not as fast as it did. A lot of people started removing their furniture when the water had already invaded their houses," said Vitor. "Here on the street we only had one day, so that the residents of the lower houses could remove everything they had and go to a safer place," said Vitor Augusto. In the state of Acre, at least 26,449 people are homeless and displaced, according to the latest update from the state government on Monday (4). In addition, 19 of Acre's 22 cities are in an emergency situation due to overflowing rivers and streams. At least 23 indigenous communities in the interior of Acre are also suffering from the effects of the floods and four people have already died as a result.
