It is on the São Lázaro farm, in the Vila Amazônia District, a rural area of the municipality of Parintins, that the 'Magalhães Family' decided to defy gravity in the production of watermelons.
The family still maintains traditional cultivation, but the results of vertical production have been encouraging.
The method was inspired by a Japanese technique and has been improved with an Amazonian touch.
As they grow, the plants are guided by wooden structures where the fruits are caught in fishing nets.
The technique has reduced losses and reduced problems with pests and diseases, in addition to ensuring a sweeter flavor.
The fruits from vertical production can weigh between 15kg and 25kg.
According to the Magalhães family, with the new method, watermelon production has increased and now reaches 20 tons per year.
The improvement opens up business prospects for producers, who continue to invest in knowledge and innovation.
