MANAUS-AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - Approximately 20 thousand species of bees are known to science, and among them, only 15% produce honey.
Those that do not produce honey are considered solitary bees, which do not live in a society between individuals of the same species.
Although they do not produce honey, they are important for the maintenance of the forest.
The park of the Federal University of Acre, in Rio Branco, occupies an area of approximately 100 hectares, and its main objective is to contribute to regional development on a sustainable basis.
The park focuses on three major pillars: biodiversity; ecology and ecosystem management; and environmental education.
The park offers instruction in sustainable beekeeping techniques to improve the production and extraction of honey in indigenous and traditional communities in Acre, thus guaranteeing income for families.
- Maria Paulino, producer.
"If I go out today and take a hundred containers of honey, stingless bees, I'll sell it," said the producer, Maria Paulino.
- Zandra Pilar - agricultural technician.
"Selling honey and its derivatives, which can be propolis, pollen, soap, cream, ointments, will help with income," said the technician from the Secretary of Agriculture of Acre, Zandra Pilar.
