MANAUS - AMAZONAS, BRAZIL – Twenty-three illegal mining dredges were destroyed during Operation Xapiri, carried out between Monday (10) and Thursday (13), in the bed of the Madeira River, near the municipality of Borba, in Amazonas.
Also during the inspection, 25 workers in conditions analogous to slavery were identified.
The operation was carried out by the Federal Police in conjunction with other federal agencies, such as the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) and the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Resources (IBAMA).
The objective is to combat criminal organizations that operate in illegal mining in the region.
The workers in conditions analogous to slavery were used for illegal mining.
The Labor Audit Office and the Public Prosecutor's Office will investigate the responsibilities of those who exploit labor in the degrading conditions found.
