MANAUS, BRAZIL- An injured pied tamarin (Saguinus bicolor), an endangered species, was rescued by the Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam) on Thursday (March 26) after being found inside a residence in northern Manaus. The animal was taken in by residents, who contacted authorities to carry out the rescue.

A symbol of Manaus since 2005, the pied tamarin is a primate species found only in the Amazonas state capital and its surrounding areas. According to Ipaam, public cooperation is essential to ensure safe operations, protecting both the animal and the people involved.

The animal showed a rope mark around its waist. After assessing the situation, a team was dispatched to the site to carry out the rescue and transport it to the Wild Animal Screening Center (Cetas), run by Brazil’s environmental agency Ibama. While under the family’s care, the primate received attention and was kept safe until the rescue team arrived.
