A jaguar cub, kept as a pet by a family, was rescued this Tuesday (4) in Santo Antônio do Içá, in the interior of Amazonas.
An anonymous tip led agents from the Municipal Department of the Environment (Semat) and the Military Police (PM) to a residence in the neighborhood of Independência, where the animal was being held captive.
The cub was named "Goliath" by the family.
After the rescue, it was taken to the headquarters of the Civil Defense, where it received veterinary care.
There is no information about how the jaguar cub was captured.
The family agreed to hand over the cub, as they knew that, as it grew, it could pose a risk to people's safety.
At just 8 months old, the cub is awaiting authorization from environmental agencies to be released and return to its natural habitat.
Keeping wild animals without proper authorization is considered an environmental crime, with a penalty of 6 months to 1 year in prison, in addition to a fine.
