PORTO VELHO, BRAZIL— A jaguar cub was rescued Wednesday afternoon (11) after being found by a resident in a rural area of Machadinho d’Oeste, in the state of Rondônia, in the Brazilian Amazon. According to the Environmental Military Police, the animal was severely injured and weakened.
Authorities said the cub was found alone, without its mother or any other animals nearby. Officers were called to the scene to carry out the rescue and later transported the animal for veterinary care.
The cub is under the care of the Wildlife Screening Center (Cetas) at the Federal University of Rondônia (Unir), in Porto Velho. It is undergoing examinations to determine possible injuries or illnesses.
In Brazil, there are projects and wildlife protection centers dedicated to species such as the jaguar. The goal is to safeguard the animal in its natural habitat and help prevent the risk of extinction.
