In recent days the level of the Purus River has dropped, but much of the city is still flooded. The Praia do Gado neighbourhood was the hardest hit and there are streets where residents have to use canoes to reach their homes. Another problem is the houses near the river, some of which have collapsed due to the natural phenomenon popularly known as: Terras Caídas (Fallen Lands). Part of the town's seafront has also been damaged by landslides. The state's Civil Defence warns of a probable rise in the waters of the Purus River, due to the peak flooding of the region's rivers, which occurs in March and lasts until April. Although the entire city has not yet been flooded, the municipal administration is already working to improve the affected streets. Actions such as road repairs and measures to minimise the impacts of the floods are being implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of local citizens.
