AMAPÁ, BRAZIL - A group of monkeys raided a fruit stand run by street vendor Francinete Correia on Monday (28), surprising locals and drawing attention online.
A video shows the monkeys leaping from branch to branch before helping themselves to the day’s food supply.
The stand is located along a highway in western Macapá, near a forested area where the animals live.
Francinete said the monkeys have a clear preference when they visit: silver bananas.
Biologist Geraldo Biondi identified the monkeys as belonging to the Saimiri genus, commonly known as squirrel monkeys or "macaco-de-cheiro" in Brazil. These primates are typically found in the Amazon rainforest.
According to Biondi, the animals were likely drawn to the stand by the scent of the fruit and a shortage of food within the forest.
