AMAZONAS, BRAZIL - AThe city of Parintins, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, lies on Tupinambarana Island—affectionately known as the “Island of Magic.”
Each year, locals and tourists come together to celebrate Amazonian culture through the colorful and spirited competition between the two iconic bois-bumbás: Caprichoso (blue) and Garantido (red), during the Parintins Folklore Festival.
At the heart of the festivities is the Bumbódromo, a dedicated arena that draws thousands of visitors from across Brazil and around the world for its spectacular performances.
Dominating the city skyline is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whose tower is the tallest structure in Parintins and holds deep symbolic significance.
Interestingly, the festival was originally created to help raise funds for the completion of the church.
Artistic preparations take place at the currais—Zeca Xibelão, home to Caprichoso in the Francesa neighborhood, and Lindolfo Monteverde, home to Garantido in Santa Clara.
These rehearsal spaces offer live previews, performances, and a glimpse behind the scenes of the cultural phenomenon that energizes the entire city.
On the banks of the Amazon River, the Parintins Municipal Market showcases the diversity of Amazonian cuisine and stuns visitors with the natural beauty surrounding it.
The city’s waterfront is another hotspot, bustling with tourists during the festival period.
This year, the Parintins Folklore Festival will take place on June 27, 28, and 29, featuring three nights of spectacular performances by the two folkloric associations.
