Heavy rain punished the municipality of Parintins on Tuesday (9), leaving two schools in the city in the interior of Amazonas completely flooded. A video recording shows a teacher teaching with her feet in the water and the pupils frightened by the situation. In the images, with the classroom flooded, empty chairs appear arranged on tables, while the students present, with their feet in the water, follow the lesson. The school corridors and courtyard were also flooded. The videos also show students trying to contain the flooding. In a statement, the State Department of Education and School Sports (SEDUC) said that the flooding was caused "due to a deficiency in the street's rainwater drainage system, which was unable to drain the rainwater, and that buses had been arranged to transfer the students from the affected units to an Integrated Full-Time Centre (CETI)". According to the statement, the schools were thoroughly cleaned on Tuesday and classes resumed the following day. The city of Parintins has a yellow alert for heavy rain, issued by the National Meteorological Institute (Inmet). According to estimates by the Centre for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the forecast is for bad weather until next Monday (15/4).
