The Acre River reached 16.95 metres at midday on Friday (8), according to a measurement taken by the Rio Branco Civil Defence. This is the first time since 29 February that the waters of the spring have fallen below 17 metres in the capital. In 2024, Rio Branco will experience the second biggest flood in its history since measurements began in 1971. On March 6, the highest level of the year was reached - 17.89 metres. The highest flood ever recorded was 18.40 metres in 2015. Across the state, at least 28,952 people are homeless and displaced, according to the latest update from the state government yesterday (8 March). 19 of Acre's 22 cities are in an emergency situation due to overflowing rivers and streams. At least 23 indigenous communities in the interior of Acre are also suffering from the effects of the floods and five people have already died as a result. The number increased on Wednesday after a 1 year and 8 month old baby drowned in his backyard in the Tapiri Community, in the rural area of Cruzeiro do Sul.
