The state of Rondônia, in northern Brazil, recorded a 50% increase in the number of fire outbreaks registered in the first five months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, revealed data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) .
The active outbreaks are related to real-time fire detection via satellites, according to Inpe information.
According to data from the Institute's "Queimadas Program", between the months of January and May 2024, the state recorded 282 fires; which represents an increase of 50%, compared to the same period in 2023, when 188 outbreaks were detected.
To date, March has been the month of 2024 with the highest number of outbreaks, with 79 notifications.
January was the period with the lowest number of registrations.
A focus must be at least 30 meters long by 1 meter wide so that so-called orbiting satellites can detect it. In the case of geostationary satellites, the fire front needs to be twice the size to be located, according to information from Inpe.
