A joint operation by the Brazilian and Peruvian police, as well as the Brazilian Army, detained 18 Vietnamese who were being guided by a Brazilian coyote in the region of Assis Brasil, an Acre town on the border with Peru, on Thursday night (4). According to the Federal Police (PF-AC), the group of Vietnamese were instructed to cross the border on foot in Assis Brasil, avoiding detection. However, when they arrived in Iñapari, Peru, the group was approached and arrested by the local police. The coyote, an expression used to describe the person responsible for the crossing, was not arrested. The case will be investigated, according to the PF-AC. For years, the border between Acre and Peru has been used as an immigration route for people of different nationalities to enter or leave Brazil.
