The state saw a 77 per cent reduction in deforestation. The figures are for the first two months of 2024, according to the Amazon Institute for Man and the Environment (Imazon). Contrary to this index, the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) points out that active fire outbreaks increased by 38 per cent in the first months of 2024, compared to the same period the previous year Active fire outbreaks are related to the detection of fires in real time via satellites, according to INPE. Deforestation, on the other hand, are areas where the forest has been permanently removed and are also monitored, according to Imazon. Rondônia comes 4th in the ranking of states in the Amazon that showed the biggest reductions in deforestation in the first two months of 2024. Amapá, Acre and Tocantins are in the lead. According to data from the National Institute for Space Research's (INPE) Burning Programme, as of Monday (18), the state had recorded 150 active hotspots. In 2023, during the months of January and until the end of March, 108 fires were recorded in Rondônia. So far, March was the month of 2024 with the highest number of outbreaks, with 64 notifications. January was the period with the lowest number of records.
