A ferry loaded with around 400 motorcycles has been stranded on the Madeira River for approximately 40 days.
The extreme drought has affected the transportation of cargo on the stretch between Manaus and Porto Velho, and one of the services affected is the sale of vehicles.
According to the National Department of Transportation Infrastructure (DNIT), the river's waterway is one of the most important transportation routes in the North region.
Since July, vessels have been prohibited from sailing at night due to the drought that is affecting the entire region.
Barges transporting grains, such as corn and soybeans, and fuel, such as gasoline and diesel, have been stopped along the river, waiting for better navigation conditions.
Operations at the Port of Porto Velho were temporarily halted for the first time in history on September 23.
Shipowners and port operators have halted their activities due to the navigability conditions on the Madeira River.
The situation of an “unnavigable” river has forced concessionaires to change the vehicle transport route.
The route previously made by river, between Manaus and Porto, has changed its route to Belém and now reaches the capital of Rondônia by land, via BR-364.
