With the arrival of the Amazonian summer, the outbreaks of fires have intensified in southern Amazonas. The NGO Greenpeace carried out an overflight in the region, to show the real situation of the forest that has several areas being destroyed by flames and deforestation. Among the ten cities with the largest area under deforestation alerts in the biome in 2023, four are in southern Amazonas, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research, Inpe. One of the regions where the overflight took place was the district of Santo Antônio do Matupi, in Manicoré. The area belongs to the Union and, by law, should be preserved.
The presence of illegal land grabbers and loggers in the region is very strong, and as a consequence criminal burnings and deforestation become more frequent. On the border between Humaitá and Tapauá, cities in the interior of Amazonas, burning has been going on for a week. The Juma indigenous land is located 500 metres from the site. Despite the flagrant fires, there was a drop of more than 40% in alerts in the Amazon Forest, compared to the same period in 2022.
