The giant watermelons of producer Raimundo Pereira, 58, became an attraction at the XVIII Watermelon Festival in the municipality of Normandia, in northern Roraima, because the largest of them reached 50kg. Raimundo has been a local producer for 32 years and is known in the town as "Raimundinho da Melancia". To give you an idea, his watermelons are up to three times bigger than the ordinary ones sold in supermarkets. The grower explains that this species of fruit is a variant of the jubilee, made for those who like to grow "giant" watermelons for display purposes, but he guarantees that they are great for eating, and even says that they are sweet. The fruit was exhibited at a festival that took place in the city last weekend. The event celebrates the Normandy producers' harvest, which is expected to reach 8,400 tonnes this year. The festival is much more than a showcase for producers, it's an opportunity to close deals and improve production.
