This is already the second worst drought in the upper Solimões River region in thirteen years. The change in the rivers of the Amazon has a direct impact on the lives of local residents. The shallow waters limit the navigation of large vessels and the journey to the local municipalities takes longer than expected. According to the state's civil defence, forty-two municipalities are in a state of emergency due to the drought affecting the Amazon region.
