Prospectors occupied the waterfront of the city of Humaitá demanding the legalization of the activity and did not allow the celebrations of the 155th anniversary of the municipality located in the interior of Amazonas. The extractivists even built a fire barrier on one of the city's streets to attract the attention of the authorities. A military police officer was at the scene, but only observed the protest. No one was arrested. It all started after an operation by the Federal Police and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Resources (Ibama), against illegal mining in a region of the Madeira River near the municipality, on Tuesday morning (14). Around 50 ferries that were used to dredge gold were burned. In solidarity with the extractivists who had their equipment destroyed, the mayor of Humaitá canceled the city festival that would have been held that same day.
